Alpine Coaching Staff
The WVA and BBTS Ski Club alpine coaching staff has
over 100 combined years of alpine coaching
experience at the highest levels of training and
certification along with having Olympic and World
Cup experience. This coaching staff assesses each
athlete’s skill level on an ongoing basis, allowing
training programs to be geared toward the athletes’
abilities.
Alpine Head Coaching
Staff
Tom Barbeau
- Executive Director of Athletics,
Alpine Program Director and Head JIII Coach
- Tom is a graduate of McGill University in
Canada with a bachelors degree in Education
and a masters degree in Physical Education.
Tom is fully certified in the Burdenko
Method for conditioning developed by Russian
Sports Scientist Igor Burdenko. Tom has
been named the USSA Eastern Alpine and NHARA
Coach of the Year. Tom is the ex-Canadian
National Team Coach and has also served as
the South African Olympic coach at the
Nagano and Salt Lake City Olympics.
Peter Stokloza - JI and JII Coach - In addition
to his role as a JI and JII
coach, Peter is the Chief Executive
Officer and Executive Director of WVBBTS.
Peter holds a BS in Business Management from
Plymouth State University and was a full
time coach, Business Manager and Dean of
Students for WVBBTS throughout the 1990’s.
Peter is a former Eastern Development Coach
for the US Ski Team and an international
certified coach for USSA. Peter has coached
NOR-AM to World Cup men and women athletes,
has coordinated competition and training
camps around the world and is currently part
of the USSA educational staff.
Jason Guilbert
- Head JI/JII Coach -
Jason has
been a professional ski coach for the past 10 years.
His past employment includes: FIS coach for the
Waterville/Holderness ski team from 1999-2001,
J3 coach for Franconia Ski Club from 2003-04,
and Head Coach and Snowsports Program Director
from 2004-2009 for New Hampton School. Jason
has worked with and coached several US ski team
and FIS-level athletes and traveled to
competitions and training camps throughout the
US and internationally. He is a USSA certified
coach and official. Jason has an extensive
racing background that includes attending and
graduating from Waterville Valley Academy in
1992, competing on the UNH ski team from
1993-1997, competing in Nor-am and FIS
competitions and being a silver medalist in the
Junior II Olympics. Jason has a BS from
the University of New Hampshire and brings to
the WVBBTS organization extensive knowledge and
expertise on alpine racing technique and
tactics, appropriate training progressions and
racer management skills, a vast knowledge of
alpine equipment and the ability to create a
professional alpine training environment.
Fred Turton - Youth Coordinator and Head JIV Coach-Fred
has had over 30 years of alpine coaching
experience in both the eastern and western
United States as well as abroad at the
JI-JV, FIS, Head Coach and Program Director
levels. Fred is a USSA International
Certified Coach, an ex-PSIA certified Level
III, an active FIS Technical Delegate and a
USSA Level III Alpine Official in all
categories. Fred has extensive related
experience including previously serving as a
member of the US Ski Team support staff and
serving on numerous state, regional and
national USSA committees as well as
participating in the PSIA National Academy
and serving as the USSA Western Region
Summer Camps Director. Fred spent six
seasons with BBTS until 1979, and, having
returned for the 2005 season, is excited to
be back home with the athletes at BBTS.
Jeff Sampson - JV Coach - Jeff is a
graduate of Plymouth State College where he
majored in art. Jeff was Ski Club
Administrator and BWL Coach for the Campton
Mountain Ski Club from 1986-1988 and a Ski
School Instructor at Tenney Mountain from
1989-1990. Jeff was a BBTS JV Coach from
1992-2002 and the BBTS Program Coordinator
for Mitey Mites along with weekend JIV’s and
JV’s from 2003
through the end of the 2004/2005 season. Jeff spent six
years as general manager of Ski and Sport
Retail Shops, three years managing
recreational areas including a small ski
area, fifteen years as tennis teaching
professional and 10 years as a youth soccer
coach.
Steve Cooney
- Mitey Mites Coordinator and Mitey Mites
Coach - Steven is a
graduate of Plymouth State College. His
studies included both exercise science and
philosophy. In 1997, Steven began working
with the BBTS race program. Steve has been
mentored by coaches Tom Barbeau, Jeff
Sampson, and Jon-Eric Jonson and has
spent the majority of his tenure
working with the Mitey Mites Program within
BBTS.
