- I hope you are all enjoying this first glimpse
of spring and the many fun activities it brings to you and your
family. As I look back on the season I am so proud of all that our
athletes have accomplished both in attaining their personal goals as
well as performing well academically and competitively on snow. I
am also so appreciative of the support of you as parents in loving
and supporting them in achieving their goals.
- WVBBTS enrollment figures hit record levels
this season-almost 400 athletes (over 100 of which were Academy
athletes) representing a membership of over 1100 athletes, parents
and siblings. Approximately 75 of these athletes were in our ages 8
and under development program which speaks so strongly for the
future of WVBBTS. With this growth it becomes even more critical
that we have the appropriate staff and infrastructure in place to
not only continue to deliver the same quality programs as we have in
the past but to make continued improvements in our offerings. To
that end we are already busy planning for next season. I have been
meeting with program directors, head coaches and Academy
administration over the past few weeks in order for us to identify
our goals, objectives and key initiatives for next season and
determine the staffing, equipment, resources and budgets necessary
to support all of this. I am very excited with the progress made on
the above process in just a few short weeks. I welcome and value
any feedback or recommendations that you may have as I complete this
process over the next few weeks.
- Enjoy the off season, ask your children what
their personal goals are for next season and remind them that great
snowsports athletes become even greater in the off season working on
age appropriate strengthening and conditioning. The nice weather
affords all types of opportunities to accomplish this in a fun
environment.
- Take care and we will see you next November!
Sincerely,
Pete |

- The Headmaster’s Banquet was very well
attended this year and I must thank John and Tina Howard for
providing us such excellent food and atmosphere in their restaurant,
Diamonds’s Edge North, which, along with the presentation of the WVA
awards, proved to be a fine and fitting end to our Academy year.
With the assistance of Molly Testwuide, last year’s recipient of the
Headmaster’s Award, I was honored to award this year’s Headmaster’s
Award to Ali Ewanouski. Ali is in her senior year and has attended
WVA for 5 years, starting in the 8th grade. Ali is an
excellent student athlete and has been a vital member of our
community. Erin Fucigna, a junior, made a special presentation to
the seniors. Her presentation was a framed memento that she
personalized for each senior. This was our largest senior class and
many of them have attended WVA since their middle school years.
Through the years they have made a positive impact on life at WVA
and we will miss them but it is time for them to move on and I am
sure they will continue to do great things.
The academic awards
presented were: English; Katie Todaro, Alicia Cavanaugh, Fred
Berlanti, Allison Lee, Devin Keller, Gordon Ellinwood and Lindsay Todaro.
Math; Scott Nelson, Kerry Daigle, Ryan Storm, Stacey Bolger,
Alicia Cavanaugh, Brett Stein, Dario Baldoni, Erin Fucigna, Molly
Testwuide and Andrew Hathaway. Computer Science; Fred Berlanti.
Social Studies; Andrew Hathaway, Lindsay Todaro, David Powers,
Katie Todaro, Sarah McElheney, Alicia Cavanaugh, Erich Berberich.
Science; John Kalinski, Lindsay Todaro, Adam Dropkin and Ryan
Schmidt. Foreign Language; Ian Hart, Devin Keller, Lindsay
Todaro, Colin Hart, Chelsea Stevens, Garrett Quimby, and Erin Fucigna.
Art; Alicia Cavanaugh, Katie Todaro, Garrett Quimby, Mackenzie
Carroll and Ryan Schmidt. It was a wonderful evening and hard to
believe that another year is complete.
- To our students: Work hard and do your very
best to achieve your highest level of excellence in your academics
to insure a strong finish to your school year!

- The dust has settled (pretty much) from the
past season and now we can begin to really look ahead. The first
meeting of the Admissions Committee will be this week and we will be
taking a look at the returning students. A letter will be going out
with prices and program lengths for returning students.
- Once we have a sense of space needs for those
students we can begin to look at incoming students. Applications
for the upcoming season have begun to come in and we will start to
look at those students as their application packets are complete.
Waterville Valley Academy does not have deadlines for admissions.
We have what is known as a “rolling admissions” policy. So to any
of you out there thinking of applying, it is recommended that you
get your application in sooner rather than later.
- If you or someone you know is interested in an
application, they can be downloaded from the BBTS website or just
call the Administrative office and I will be happy to send a packet
out.
- I am looking forward to a lot of new ideas and
changes for next year.

- I would like to thank you all very much for
making this season very enjoyable and a success. I sure hope your
families had a good time. I hope your children learned about
skiing, about competing and about themselves.
- Even though it was a trying start to the
winter, it finished well. The mountain supplied us with great
training and many coaches gave excellent efforts and showed their
passion for teaching children.
- Many of you were out to the bitter end. Erin
and Abby Fucigna raced in Quebec, Canada and we were well
represented at the UNH Fundraiser. I saw the whole Crane-Mauzy clan
together making last tracks on Waterville Valley.
- The athletes’ and coaches’ love for racing
made for some excellent season ending results. However, besides the
racing there were many fun activities during the last weeks. The
Pond Skimming at the base of World Cup was hilarious. We did not see
the Mosenthal or the Dropkin families ski across the Pond arm in arm
this year, but we did see some great swimming by Peter Fucigna, Max
Lash, Alex Lash and Ian McKinnon. These are some very brave and
frozen young men. Jamie Crane-Mauzy made it across the water and
finished on one ski no less.
- This photo below was of the winners of “Hat
Day” at WVA. Third place went to Tom Sampson (left), second place
was Neal Caldwell (right) and the Cone Hair Team of Alyssa Sullivan,
Molly Testwuide and Ali Ewanouski were the grand prize winners. I
sure am going to miss all the seniors graduating from WVA.

- Every March the OLD COACHES love to put the
racers through bamboo courses to show them how tough it was in the
old days. “Sixties Day” has turned into quite the event, but I still
believe we are waiting for one of our so called ski racers to finish
the bamboo course correctly. I wonder if we looked this bad back
then.

- What a great turnout for the Bash, everyone
showed true Black and Blue spirit. A big congratulations goes to our
Award winners:

o
A reminder about our Summer Ski Camps in Hintertux,
Austria and La Parva, Chile. If you are serious about your racing and if
your schedule allows for it, making turns in the summer is very
important. It is tough on the muscle memory to go for 7 months without
skiing. So if you can make it happen we would love to have you with us
and of course Moms and Dads are welcome.
Thanks, Tom Barbeau

- I’m sure you can appreciate the coaches’
difficult task in selecting just a few among so many fine athletes.
25 of you attended JO’s returning with 19 medals. Several (not among
the list above) won Eastern Championship titles, A Slopestyle
events, and A Dual Mogul competitions! These accomplishments, like
so many smaller breakthroughs, result from hard work and dedication.
- All of us can look back on this season with
both satisfaction and with many lessons learned. Next season. I look
forward to significant initiatives addressing freestyle
administration, travel and study supervision, and overall safety
standards. I thank CEO Pete Stokloza, Headmaster Gary Benedix, and
Athletic Director Tom Barbeau for their support thus far, and as we
move forward as a program.
- I wish to thank our full-time coaches, Rob
Day, Dan Shuffleton, Greg Ruppel, and Nori Lupfer for their depth of
commitment and hard work throughout the season. Our weekend staff,
Jesse Chapman, Hannah Braunstein, Ryan Day, and Eric Horton, all
coached, shoveled, and helped our athletes tirelessly. Kristine
Lotoski also proved immensely valuable as our fitness and sports
science coach. Thank you.
- With the enormous help from parents and
volunteers, we managed to produce 2 well-organized weekends of
events on excellent courses. Much thanks goes out to the Waterville
Valley Ski Area for their unmatched commitment to our venues and
events.
- Personally, I had a wonderful time coaching
and traveling with so many of you. I look forward to many coaching
opportunities with you this summer, and on into next winter.

will be the case. Either way, we will make it work as we did this
