Happy Spring!

  • We had a sensational year of skiing and riding and I am a little sad the year has finally come to a close!  I just enjoyed one of the most special and important moments of my life with the birth of my new son Zealand Dell Stokloza.  Zealand and his mother Chrisdel are both doing great as we all are acclimating to family life.

  • Our programs enjoyed successes as well as challenges throughout this season.  I want to thank all the athletes, BBTS staff, parents, and members for representing our organization admirably.  I also want to thank the mountain staff and especially Tom Day, Rob Batchelder, Eddie, and Bill Feather Sr. for all their efforts on behalf of BBTS. I am proud of the achievements and the work that was done by everyone.

  • It is of my highest priority to start preparing for next season by reviewing all aspects of our programs.  To remain competitive we need to be able to be as innovative and resourceful as possible.  One of these innovations came in the form of live-video which had its debut during the Junior III Olympics this March.  It is one of my goals to be able to take this technology to the next level by having live-video available for all BBTS races as well as selective BBTS training sessions.  I want to personally thank Carl Anderson and Wayne Goldberg for bringing this wonderful technology to BBTS.  While we will always be challenged by the weather, venues, finances, and facilities we look forward to discovering new ways to accomplish our goals and ultimately our organization’s mission and vision statements.

  • We need feedback from our membership and I encourage all members to give the program directors and I their input positive or critical.  Please feel free to email me at pstokloza@wvbbts.org with your thoughts or any insights you may want to share on our programs.

  • On a personal side I would like to thank my executive staff; Tom Barbeau, Nick Preston, Bill Enos, Gary Benedix, Sharon Schmidt, all the teachers, and coaches for all their hard work and dedication to our programs this season.  I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable spring and hopefully your children will be able to attend one of our summer program offerings.  Summer camps can be found on our website www.wvbbts.org.  If you have an athletes in the sixth grade or older and want to explore the full-time training program, please contact Waterville Valley Academy (603) 236 4246.  WVA has program offerings from one month to five and is an excellent place to balance your child’s academics and athletics.  I also want to congratulate our seniors at the academy who were accepted and will be attending prestigious colleges and universities like; Dartmouth, Williams, Bowdoin, UNH, UVM, Middlebury, Boston College, University of Utah, PSU to name a few.   Good luck to all the student/athletes in their college career.

  • In conclusion I want to extend my deepest sympathies to the families of Kirk Keating and Leland Sosman.  Both Leland and Kirk made countess contributions to our club and our sport and they will not be forgotten. There will always be a special place for their families at BBTS and their memories will always be a part of us.

Sincerely,

Pete

  • I would like to thank our faculty, coaches, staff, parents, and students for all their hard work and dedication.  It takes a team effort between all the aforementioned people to make the Academy program work and they did a great job.   At this point it is imperative that our students maintain the highest level of effort upon and after their return to their home schools to ensure a strong finish to the academic year.
  • Our seniors deserve congratulations on their very impressive college acceptances.  At this point the list is not complete, with acceptances still coming in, but I would like to share what I do know.  Dario Baldoni; Boston College, Penn State, St. Michaels: Brendan Chadwick; University of Utah, Sierra Nevada, Westminster College: Ashley Conner; University of Colorado Boulder, University of Utah: Ryan Ewing; University of Vermont, Plymouth State University, University of New Hampshire, University of Colorado: Erin Fucigna; Dartmouth College: Jeremy Landy; Sierra Nevada: Allison Lee; U.S. Ski Team, St. Lawrence University, University of Vermont, University of New Hampshire, Stonehill College, University of Maine – Honors Program: Amy McLaughlin; Williams College, Colby College, Bates College, University of Vermont: Kia Mosenthal; Brown University: Maddy Packard; Dartmouth College, Middlebury College, University of Vermont, University of New Hampshire: Jordan Parks; Colorado Mountain College: Bennett Roukema; University of Vermont, University of Colorado Boulder: Doug Stearns; Montana State, Evergreen College, Sierra Nevada: Brett Stein; Bowdoin College.
  • The staff at Diamond’s Edge North did an excellent job with the Headmaster’s Banquet again this year.  The food was exquisite and the atmosphere was perfect for the evening.  It was my honor to present the Headmaster’s award to Erin Fucigna who has been a vital part of the student body for her seven years of attendance.  Erin has demonstrated excellence in her academics, athletics and school spirit.  Erin will be attending Dartmouth College next year where I am sure she will have a bright future.  The Academic Awards for the year were presented by the Academy Department Chairs. Alpine Corner-From the Desk of Tom Barbeau

  • Thank you, everyone, for a successful and enjoyable 07/08 ski season.

  • We finished on a high note with an excellent banquet and another well run race at the Dan Bean.

  • Congratulations and thank to our departing president James Fucigna and his family for so many great years helping BBTS. I look forward to many more. Also, a good luck to our incoming prez Robert Mann.

  • Not only was the Dan Bean a fun day, we had quite a number of takers for our annual “River Dunk” in the Mad River. Some of our ”Brave, or “Tough” or “Crazy” dunkers were Jilli Crane-Mauzy, Sam Goldberg, Hannah Bancroft, Mike Bancroft, Kat Bancroft, Dan Bancroft, Eliza Cowie, Caroline Winslow, Macaela Wright, Devon Wright, Todd Harris and Ian Harris. Hopefully, we will have even more dunkers next year.

  • I got to ski Mt. Washington yesterday. Haven’t seen snow like this since 1978. If you haven’t hung up the boards for the season then a trip up to Tuckerman’s Ravine is a great idea. Besides it is good for the legs.

  • Please read one of the latest “Ski Racing” magazine articles about Lindsay Vonn. Picabo Street talks about Vonn’s focus both on and off the slopes. Definitely something to live by.

FROM JACK BAILEY

  • Thanks and great job by everyone this season.  Let's hope Mother Nature blesses us with a good snow year next winter and we will try for some more good results.

  • The I/II's ended their season strong and with the future looking bright.  The last two Lafoley series races brought our troops to Cannon on the 29th and Attitash on the 30th of March for two Slalom races.  At Cannon, former J3, Shannon Quinn, was right in the thick of things with a top 10 finish.  Julian Jacobson, Stacey Bolger and WVA alumni George Packard went 1st, 3rd, 5th, respectively and Alvin Clemens skied to a top 30 finish, ending in 29th.  At Attitash the next day the top finishers for the men were a 3rd place finish for Jacobson, an 8th place finish for Tom Sampson, and a 15th place finish for first year Garrett Quimby.  This result for Sampson was enough for him to hold on to the Lafoley Series title.  Nice work!

  • Wrapping up the FIS circuit brought the women to Smuggler's Notch for two slalom races where Erin Fucigna was 3rd and 9th and Chelsea Stevens jumped 30 bibs to finish among the top 30.  Lenny French finished 20th at the Development FIS Slalom at Attitash on the 25th of March.

  • Eastern Cup Finals concluded at Burke Mountain in Vermont with many of the nations top skiers from the US Ski Team on hand.  In the Super G on March 31, Maddie Packard skied to an impressive podium with a 3rd place finish.  Then on April Fool's day, Erin Fucigna skied to a 12th place in the slalom.

  • Take some needed time off, then back to work with some summer conditioning.

Great Job!

Head J1/J2 Alpine Coach

Snowboard Corner-From the Desks of Bill Enos and Peter Thorndike

FROM BILL ENOS

  • Thank you for another good year, everyone progressed far beyond anyone’s expectations. There were far too many good results to list.  It was also an unbelievable year for snowfall and a pretty darn good year for our park. So I am going to keep this very short – I have been running the snowboard program now for 8 years and I have never seen a group of kids work as hard as the riders in this program did this past season.  I would personally like to thank every parent that has given our coaching staff and myself the opportunity to work with such amazing young people. When all is said and done we have become more than just coaches, we have become good friends.

  • Keep your eyes open for info on snowboard ramp camp in lovely Lake Placid NY June  27-29

Have a fun summer

Bill

FROM PETE THORNDIKE

  • WHEN:  March 28th to April 5th 2008
  • WHERE:  Copper Mt. Colorado
  • WHO:  Over 1600 competitors from around the country, four coaches and 26 athletes competing in all five events represented WVBBTS
  • WHAT:  Five venues, and six days of competition
  • WHY: ‘Cuz we all love being overtired, stressed out, overworked, and broke!

  • USASA Nationals is always an exciting way to wrap up the season. The WVBBTS athletes had a strong showing; standouts included Kai Wiggins, 6th place in halfpipe, Millie Chapman, 4th place overall, Sam Bouchie 11th in boardercross, Eamon Aldridge, 11th in GS, Angela Mercieri, 6th in GS, Olivia Wiggins, 8th in slopestyle and Mackenzie Joyce earned the title of National Champion with a 1st place finish in GS.

  • Though the week was full of competitions the riders each had at least one day off to explore the mountain. John Frawley, in his first season as a coach and his first trip out West, spent many long days on the hill coaching and riding with the athletes. Judging from the color of his sunburned face (purple) it seemed he and the riders crammed a month’s worth of riding into the six days.

  • It was a great Nationals and I want to thank all the athletes, parents and coaches for all their help and support throughout the week. I am looking forward to doing it all over again next season!

Freestyle Corner-From the Desk of Nick Preston

  • With the conclusion of the 2008 ski season, each of us will no doubt spend some moments reflecting on the bygone winter. I’m sure that most present for many of us is the passing of Kirk Keating, whose family is at the heart of our BBTS skiing community.
  • I sat with Kirk one late afternoon a year and a month ago in the Gondola Square at Steamboat awaiting others to come off the hill. The day had been filled with JO excitement and Colorado sunshine, and both of us relished a chance to sit and rest our skied out legs while shading our parched faces. As Kirk and I exchanged several ski buddy comments about skiing that day, I took the opportunity to express to him my best wishes for the ordeal he was to face, once he returned home. Kirk thanked me with a muted reply, as the weight of this reality suddenly hung heavy on the afternoon. We sat silent, both in preponderance of….I’m not sure what. I felt like I was suddenly on a precipice overlooking a vast mysterious space. What was in Kirk’s mind, I wouldn’t guess. We sat a bit longer, not without watery eyes. The others arrived.
  • I’ll remember Kirk by that moment, for as I walked to the parking lot, skis on my shoulder, athletes in tow, my drained emotions were replaced with a powerful appreciation for friends, family, the beauty of the mountains, the day, life, and loss. My heart grew larger that day, a small gift from Kirk. He was a terrific guy, and a fine skier.
  • From all of us BBTS Freestyle people, I extend sincere sympathies and well wishes to the Keating Family, who have endured a long and tragic ordeal with courage and dignity. I look forward to contributing to Olivia’s and Kyle’s bright future in skiing.
  • The family has requested, that in lieu of flowers, Kirk’s remembrance may be honored with donations to The Keating Children Education fund c/o Rockport National Bank, Rockport, MA 01966 or the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers, MA 01923.
  • If you haven’t visited this link regarding Kirk, please do. It’s wonderful. http://www.itemlive.com/articles/2008/03/31/obituaries/obits02.txt

WVA Student Life Initiative; Volunteerism

  • Parent Volunteerism

    • At the Year End Bash WVBBTS gave special recognition to the WVBBTS Parent Volunteer of the Year-Martha McLaughlin-for her countless hours spent day and night in preparation for the J3 Alpine Junior Olympics.
