From our CEO-Peter Stokloza

  • The Northeast has had a challenging year with little snow and inconsistent temperatures.  Some of our snowsports like snowboard and freestyle have had to travel to find appropriate training venues.  The extra travel and constant moving of our athletes and coaches has been an added stress to everyone-athletes, coaches, teachers and parents. Please try to thank our dedicated coaches, teachers and mountain employees for all their hard work and commitment in a difficult season. The athletic spirit is alive and flourishing inside our athletes and staff!  I personally want to give a special thanks to Eddie from the mountain that has helped BBTS produce some of the best competitions in the east.

  • Over the past weekend I was lucky enough to attend the Eastern Freestyle Championships at Waterville Valley located on Tyler.  With high winds and cold temperatures I witnessed several great athletic performances by BBTS athletes in the event. While watching the event and talking with parents and coaches, it was explained to me how the scoring worked.  Looking at the athletes with regards to turns and line, air and time helped gain a critical eye to what to look for at a mogul event.  Waterville Valley Ski Area provided a great venue and Nick Preston and his team did a great job with their athletes. I am confident Freestyle athletes will compete well at Junior Olympics and in the US Freestyle Nationals.

  • BBTS athletes and Coaches are approaching the National Championship season for Alpine, Snowboard and Freestyle. I want to tell them we are proud of them for representing their families and BBTS with pride, and the best of luck.

  • This year’s annual appeal has been launched and we look forward to receiving your support.  The proceeds from the annual appeal help both the BBTS Ski Club and Waterville Valley Academy continue to put forth highly competitive snowsport programs and academics. Thank you for your past generosity and your continued support.

Student Corner written by P $

  • Allison Lee and Dylan Ferguson were traveling to St. Petersburg, Russia for ten days this month to compete in the Junior World Freestyle Championships.

  • They both attend New Hampton School for the first and third trimesters and WVA for the second trimester of the school year.  Fortunately for them, New Hampton students have a long spring break for most of the month of March.

  • Dylan Ferguson is a senior at New Hampton School.  He’s been a student/athlete on the WVA Freestyle Team since sixth grade.  Unfortunately, Dylan was ill just before he left for Russia, so I was unable to interview him.

  • Allie is a sophomore in her second year attending WVA.  During the ski season, she lives at Mountain Fare Inn, home of Nick Preston, Head Coach of the WVA Freestyle Program.

  • “Allie, what is your best freestyle maneuver? “

  • “We are going to be competing in the “aerials.”  That’s when you go off a jump and do acrobatic maneuvers in the air.  My best is a “layout”—a backflip in the layout position.”

From our Athletic and Alpine Director-Tom Barbeau

  • Congratulations to all our athletes for their excellent efforts and their fine results. As you can see below WVBBTS was the BWL Team Champion.  We also had winners at the Eastern J1 Championships and the Eastern J2 Championships. We are doing well young to old.

  • PARENTS: There are still many races to compete this season. Say very little and support a ton. The athletes are learning to handle competing and pressure-it is better to bite your tongue and just say; “Good luck, I love you”.

A correction to last week’s newsletter:  Tec Cup Finals GS Sunapee-Molly Testwuide-8th

THESE ARE FANTASTIC RESULTS. GREAT EFFORT AND PLAY BY ALL THE ATHLETES AND COACHES.

From Our Head Mogul Coach-Mike Macomber

  • First off I would like to thank all of our volunteers this past weekend.  I believe we had a wonderful event at home and heard nothing but praise from other mountains.  We made the best out of our little snow season and pulled off a fantastic event,  I would also like to mention that we missed you Wayne.  I'm sure you will read this, but the event sure wasn't the same without you there-we all hope to see you soon.

Now onto the main event!

  • This past weekend, in case you didn't notice our athletes competed in the Eastern Freestyle Championships here at WV.  On Saturday in Single Moguls our ladies started it off right with Sophia Schwartz earning the Silver Medal, and Kenna Nash claiming the Bronze.  Kiki Adams finished in 5th place with Calli DeGrace finishing 10th!     In the men Mikey Clarke came out of nowhere and laid down an amazing second run can claiming his corner of the podium with a Bronze Medal.  Reed Snyderman, not far behind , finished in 7th position, and Henry Worobec rounded out the top 10 in 9th position.

  • This weekend was important for all these athletes because it was not only our Eastern Championships but it also was a competition for the Eastern Wild Card spot to Nationals.  Mikey Clarke, most likely earned his Wild Card for the Men, and Sophia Schwartz, unless she has qualified already, will claim it for the women!  Congratulations to both, and hope to see you there.

  • Saturday night we also held the Eastern Banquet, with a assortment of Mexican food, good friends, and wonderful gifts!  It was great to see all the families out there supporting our athletes and the Waterville contingent shone above the rest with their bright orange hats and cheers of applause.  A few seasonal awards were given out this weekend as well.  Allie Lee managed to claim two of those with MVP in both Women's Halfpipe and Women's Big Air.  Dylan Ferguson as well managed to claim his own MVP award in Men's Aerials.  Congratulations to the two, and we hope to see them soon as they return from Junior Worlds in Russia.

  • On that note, a little information for you on Jr. Worlds.  I haven't seen any results yet but I have heard that Allison Lee finished 4th in Aerials, Dylan Ferguson finished 4th in Aerials, and Kayla Snyderman finished 4th in Singles.   Kayla also finished 5th in Duals-she felt there were too many 4th place finishes out there anyway!  Congratulations to our team and we can't wait to have these guns back home!

Now onto Sunday, DUALS DAY!

  • We all know duals are by far my favorite day of the week, there is something cathartic about knocking your competition off one-by-one all day long and skiing until the end of the day for the win!  There's no better example of this than our ladies who decided they didn't like the results from the previous day and decided to switch positions.  Kenna Nash inched up on Sophia and won the Silver Medal, while Sophia refused to lose too much ground and claimed the Bronze.  Our men had some amazing duals but unfortunately were knocked out by some older competition.  Reed Snyderman held our best finish of the day, fighting it out until the end for 8th place.

  • All in all it was an amazing weekend of competition.  I know we normally stick to the top-10 for awards but seeing as how this was a special weekend I have some honorable mentions as well.  In the ladies it goes to Alissa Pinkoski who scored a personal best of 20.27 and finished in 12th position.  In our men I couldn't decide so it goes to three of our guys.  Robbie Dresser finished with his best 20.35 and 19th position, and this is a guy who almost didn't qualify!  Congratulations to finally listening to your coach!  Ross Attardo finished 22nd with his best 20.07 and Cal “I had the largest air of the day” Robertie scored his personal best of a 19.35!   I know I can't say it enough but congratulations to everyone!

  • The team will be around for the remainder of the week, with training on Saturday here at home.  Most of us will be leaving for US Junior Nationals on Sunday and looking forward to bringing home some good news from there as well.  I hope everyone has a good week and we will talk to you all soon!

Snowboard NH Week

  • Another crazy week for weather, as our riders forged ahead. There were some duct tape wallets made and some finishing touches put on some hats. Jerid Lucas made a pretty cool truck driver wallet and hat while Eamon Aldridge did the best sticker job and graffiti job on his. Add a couple of top finishes to this and a day riding Loon’s park and it turned into a pretty good week.

  • Chaz Guldmond - former WVA rider-placed 3rd at the slopestyle at the Vans Triple Crown in Northstar, California. Chas has been working hard as tub boy during the summer. He has definitely paid his dues. Chaz took home $7,000 for 3rd.

  • Raking in $500 at WV on Saturday was SAMMY HULBERT (present WVA student) by winning the main event contest at WV this weekend. Sam threw down all day for a big win. Great job Sam

Race-

  • It’s good to have Matt Conaty back in our line–up. Matt had a bad crash at the gnarly BX in WV last month. It was a great week for race progression, everyone definitely stepped it up a notch. I got a chance to tear it up with Kevin and Danielle one morning-they are on their way-their turns are getting close to perfect. Much to my surprise Kevin says can we go work on jumps for the king of the mountain tour for next season. Next thing I know, we are hitting some of the small jumps in the park. I’m not getting any younger. Kev says you hit it first and I’ll be right behind you.  My reply to him I believe was - don’t get too close.  In the end we all survived. Anton said the brownie brat pack had a ketchup eating contest on Sunday with Libby taking the title.

Weeks training

  • 3/7 –10th mid week training at WV – possibly a trip to LOON for training. Dryland from 4:30 to 6.

  • 3/11 training in the park at WV

  • 3/12 Red Bull Schooled - come watch WVA riders defend their title against the best riders in the country.

  • 3/13 7am leave for the US Open -
