  • Championship season!  It is now time for our athletes and coaches to attend their respective championship events.  BBTS is proud to announce we have SIX alpine and freestyle athletes competing in the Junior World Championships.  This is the highest level of competition for our junior athletes. Our organization, coaching staff, parents and athletes should be proud of their achievements!  I wish everyone who is competing and supporting our athletes either in the parental role or the coaching role the best of luck over the next two weeks.  It is an exciting time for our program!

  • To all the younger athletes attending state and regional championships, Junior Olympics and US National events, we are proud of your achievements and look for your success in these events.

  • We have just over one month to go, wow the year has flown by fast.  Our staffs of coaches and teachers have worked extremely hard this winter along with the athletes and parents. We are all a team at BBTS the athletes, the parents and the coaches.  Please as competitors, coaches and parents continue to respect each other at home and at away competitions.  Represent yourself, your family and your team with pride. Only together as an organization will we continue to fulfill our mission and vision!

  • I would like to personally thank STEVEN COONEY.  He has done and continues to do an outstanding job with our Mitey Mites program.  The number of athletes continues to grow and Steven has stepped up to the challenge by providing a great skills based program for both the alpine and freestyle disciplines.  He has a magic touch with people and we are very lucky to have him as a BBTS coach.  Thanks again Steven for everything you do!

Sincerely,

Pete

  • A few weeks ago (since our last newsletter) was the first time in my memory that we missed two consecutive days of classes due to the weather.  The snow was a welcome sight but, with the excessive drifting and continued precipitation, it took two days to clear all the exits and open up the parking lots.  We have 48 teachers along with a number of day students who have to be able to drive here, park their cars and get into and out of the buildings.  It had been rumored that we have no snow days at WVA but, when considering the safety of all, it does happen!
  • As I mentioned in the last newsletter our seniors are starting to receive their college acceptances and making plans for next year.  The information that I have received thus far is as follows:  Tom Sampson has been accepted to; Montana State, Western State (CO), and St. Anselm. Molly Testwuide; UNH, UVM and Denver University.  Alyssa Sullivan has been accepted by early decision at Babson.  Mackenzie Carroll; UVM, UNH, St. Michaels and Denver University, Mackenzie is planning to attend Denver University.  Kevin Formalarie; Plymouth State.  Andrew Hathaway; Colorado University at Boulder where he plans to attend.  Alicia Cavanaugh; University of Colorado at Boulder, UNH, Clark University.  This is only a partial list and I will be pleased to report additional information as I receive it.  We have a great Senior class with many who have been with us since Middle School.
  • We started compiling progress reports about a week ago and they will be sent home and to the schools starting at the end of this week.

Academy Corner-From the Admissions Desk

  • The Admissions Committee is currently in the early planning stages for next year’s program.  A letter will be going out later this week to all potential returning students regarding their intentions for next year.  We will also be doing a similar letter for “PG”s or “Training Only”s.

  • It is also that time of the year where potential applicants and their families begin to visit the campus to see what we are about both in the classroom and on the hill.  We have begun to update some of the information that is sent out to prospective applicants and their families as well.

  • I think this is a very exciting time of the year from where I sit in the Admissions Office.  I am very much looking forward to a busy season as we get into the swing of Enrollment Contracts and all of the details that go into planning next season.

Academy Corner-From the Science Department

  • Greetings from Lib Randall and the Science Department.  This year we are lucky to have most of our faculty returning from previous years.  In addition, we have two new members in the department, Ally Keefe and John Lennon.

  • Ally is a recent graduate of UVM in Natural Resource Ecology.  As a weekend coach at Loon and a former Holderness School racer, she understands the challenges of combining academics and skiing.  She has been teaching a variety of subjects and grades, primarily dealing with Environmental and Earth Sciences.  Some of the things her students have been doing include a lab on water pollution and plotting the epicenter of an earthquake.  Before the snow fell, she dug a soil pit to look at soil horizons and a middle school student built a “Rube Goldberg” contraption which used all six simple machines to raise a flag.

  • John comes to us from the Appalachian Mountain Club, where he works seasonally as a Naturalist and Educator.  He also has been teaching a variety of subjects, from Physical Science to Life Science, to middle school students.  Genetics is a current theme with several of his students.  Earlier this year, he did a unit on waves and sound, employing our Slinky collection to illustrate main ideas.

  • We are pleased to have Matt Scagliarini back with us after several years of Environmental Consulting.  Matt is teaching Advanced Placement Biology and Anatomy & Physiology.  These upper level courses have led students to investigate the homeostatic imbalances that lead to breast cancer, the causes of osteoarthritis and the physiological effects of blood doping by professional athletes.  In addition, they have been undertaking some in depth dissections.

  • Also returning after a leave for grad school is Gary Mastin.  Gary is teaching middle school math and science, which means he covers a wide variety of subjects, as well.  A guppy tank sits on his desk, providing opportunities to discuss many aspects of Life Science and Ecology.  Other students are learning to use microscopes.

  • Sally Jensen continues to do her usual varied topics with her middle school students.  They have been keeping weather journals, building cell models and studying Mendelian Genetics.  She often is able to incorporate her passion for the Space Program into the curriculum, as well.

  • Keith Doran returned for a second year teaching Biology.  His students are growing mold on four different media and learning about different types of reproduction.  In December he oversaw and experiment comparing regular green corn and albino corn plants to show the importance of chlorophyll. The green corn is now over two feet tall and we expect to harvest in late April.

  • Kim Berman continues as our other Biology teacher, while splitting her time between classroom and her administrative duties.  Her students explore DNA structure, osmosis and cell structure through hands-on activities.

  • John Swett is back for another year of Physics.  His collection of “equipment” (toys to the lay person) provides fun and interesting activities to support sometimes difficult concepts.  Senior Alicia Cavanaugh is working on a project exploring the physics of fairy tales by translating “The Three Little Pigs” into the language of Physics.

  • This leaves me.  Back in the Chemistry corner for another year of turning copper into silver, building gumdrop molecules and showing the properties of supersaturated solutions by making lollipops.  No explosions so far this year and if anyone out there knows how to make the Periodic Table interesting, please let me know.

  • This past weekend my faith was restored in New Hampshire ski racing. Up to this point of the season we have watched all sorts of cheating at all the age levels. We have seen racers miss gates and then either not be marked by the home gatekeeper or not turn themselves in. We have observed illegal binding set-ups or have heard of coaches telling their athletes to use illegal ski lengths. We have also witnessed racers blatantly skiing the courses during inspection and we have had to wait for times to appear on the board or to see very strange times pop up on the scoreboard. We have discussed this amongst the coaches and the athletes, and the racers know we will not cheat, rules are the rules.  They do not need officials to catch them, we police ourselves.

  • Well this weekend at an Open J3/4/5 GS a young man from the Loon Mountain Racing Team stepped forward and would not receive his medal because he had missed a gate. This is great sportsmanship and we applaud him. Our team knows you win with effort, talent and some honest luck.

  • The next couple of weeks are Championship time. Below are results from the past 3 weeks and also the names of most of our racers going to different Championship Race Series. Congratulations to all of our athletes for a great season so far and good luck in the remaining competitions.

February 20, 2007

  • February Vacation weeks are here and in good timing with all this new snow. This also means that the BBTS snowboard camps are near, and there will be another potluck dinner on Friday that all are invited to. More info on the potluck will be released later this week. Both the half pipe and park are up, and are continuing to be improved. We are excited about what is to come, and look forward to another month of quality training and progression for nationals.

  • We have had an exciting past few weeks of competition. From the Grand Prix and Revolution Tour out at Mt. Bachelor, to the USASA and the Forum Young Blood comp(s) here in New Hampshire, our riders performed very well, and at the tops of their fields. To recap the update sent out about the Revolution Tour, Sam Hulbert took 1st place, and while seeded 4th after qualifiers, Wes Walsh had some tough luck on his runs and finished 11th. We are all very proud of our travel team in how they performed, and how they behaved out on the mountain.

  • Congrats to all who performed to their best abilities, we are all proud of you.

  • I want to add that we are having the BBTS/Eastern Boarder first inaugural NH Open Rail jam on the 11th of March. We are truly looking forward to this event and invite all to attend and to participate. We are expecting a large crowd, great prizes, and tons of action. If you have a chance, stop by, cheer on our riders, and have a ball. We are very happy with how the year has been going thus far. We hope to finish off the year with flying colors of gold, silver and bronze. Best of luck to all the competitors this coming weekend, ride hard, and ride well.

News Brief----- FEB 19 – FEB 26

  • “This coming weekend” has come and gone. We had a USASA HP at Loon in which our riders performed very well. Also there was Loon’s Fluorescent Nights Super pipe competition that night after the USASA comp. Ian Hart took 1st in that evening’s comp. Also taking place at Loon this past weekend was the Main Event, a competition filled with all of the regions best Pro and AM riders. 4 out of the 6 riders that we had at the comp took home prizes, finishing in the top 3 spots for their divisions. Taking 1st for the AMs was Charles Alex Sykes, and finishing 3rd was Graham Banks. For the Pro division, taking 1st was Brandon Reis, and taking 2nd was Sam Hulbert. Everyone rode well, trained well… just an all around great weekend.

  • Thanks again to all the parents for your support and patience with the park, and other things that took a little longer than expected. We hope that everyone has been, and will, enjoy their vacation time to come. We look forward to seeing you out on the slopes.

Sincerely,

Sam Harding
