  • Over the past weekend I was lucky enough to attend the Junior III Olympics at Stratton Mountain, VT.  The goals and dreams of our young athletes were all on the line.  We had commendable finishes from athletes like Jamie Crane-Mauzy who skied to a bronze medal in the slalom, and all ten athletes gave a great effort.  The event reminded me how brutal and unforgiving our sport can be especially to the minds and hearts of our young athletes.  We need to all keep the perspective that its in this journey our athletes are taking that will ground them in the future as athletes, students and members of society.  Whether a rough course or a pre-releasing ski halters a great performance, keep in mind the effort is always the most important and inspiring part of competition.

  • Our athletes and coaches have done a great job! I believe in, endorse and respect the training and racing process our athletes are going through.  Our philosophy of training is working and can been affirmed by the results of the BWL championships, JIII JO’s, Freestyle Eastern Championships, the snowboard rail jam results and results at JII Nationals.  Our athletes are all on the podium at these prestigious events!

  • With that in mind, it is my humble opinion that we need to keep searching for new and innovative training methods that will give our alpine, freestyle and snowboard competitors a better chance of reaching their individual goals.  Congratulations to every alpine, freestyle and snowboard competitor that puts it on the line and takes the risk to achieve greatness. We commend and applaud your efforts!

Sincerely,

Pete

  • Only two weeks of classes left!  Friday, March 30, 2007, is our last day of classes and the dorm will close on Sunday, April 1st.  All students must be moved out by Sunday afternoon to allow staff to clean and maintain the dorm.

  • It is my pleasure to announce that the Headmaster’s banquet has been scheduled for Thursday, March 29th, and will be held at the Diamond’s Edge North in Town Square.  Chef Mike Lewko has prepared an excellent menu that will set the stage for a great evening.  I would like to thank John and Tina Howard, the owners of Diamond’s Edge North, who have given us the opportunity to honor our student athletes here in Waterville Valley in such a fine fashion.  I am in hopes that by now all our WVA parents and students have received their invitations in the mail and will return their responses on or before the 22nd.  If you have any questions, please give us a call at my office, 603-236-4246.

  • When you are in Town Square, please stop by the Rey Center, next to the post office, and take a few moments to view the WVA student art on display.  I stopped by on Sunday and was amazed by the talent that our students, your daughters and sons, have demonstrated through their art.  This work will only be in Waterville Valley for a short time, after which, on March 17th, it will travel to the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth, where it will remain on display for the next six months.  Sarah Heidenis and Melissa Brothers, our devoted art teachers, put in many extra hours to make this happen and continue to inspire our students to do their very best.  We appreciate the graciousness of the Rey Center and the Children’s Hospital for giving us the opportunity to participate.

  • The process is underway for next year’s admissions.  Returning student forms have been mailed to all of this year’s student athletes, except the graduating seniors.  Some seniors may be considering a post graduate year at WVA.  We have a rolling admissions policy but, considering the limited space, it is important to get your application in early.  Please contact Kimberly Berman, Director Admissions, to answer any question or to set up a visit.

  • The social studies department is comprised of eleven conscientious teachers: Bob Beeman, Carl Blackstone, Cindy Bland, Bruce Brincklow, Ben Craven, Jim Dill, Nick Frye, Jim Harkens, Peg Hendel, Brendan Malloy and Nicole Powell.

  • A wide variety of courses are taught: American studies, U.S. history, world history, religion, economics, marketing, geography, sociology, psychology, philosophy, law. This diversity makes it interesting for the teachers. And the variety of experiences of the teachers is a blessing to the students.

  • Courses are presented within the context of an understanding of each student's learning style. Lesson planning includes not only subject matter but also study skills and thinking skills which meet the needs of the students. They appreciate the personal attention given by the teachers=\

  • As Peter Stokloza just said, Alpine racing is a humbling experience. It takes a certain mental toughness and competitive maturity. At the beginning of this season, Kali St. Laurent went to a race all by herself. She handled everything from the course inspection to the warm-up by herself. She then preceded to win the race by 2 seconds. At the J3 Finals, Drew Stefanic had to take care of himself for both the Slalom and the Giant Slalom. He finished 6th in the GS (2nd in the 2nd run) and was 2nd after the 1st run of the Slalom. These youngsters decided to do what they had been taught to do and took it into their own hands.

  • I watched many different athletes these past weeks at all levels of Championships. Some stepped it up and some had problems. For those who had troubles, I hope it was because they were nervous and just not ready to believe how good they can really be. I sure hope it wasn’t because of coaches or parents. Of all the interviews I have done with our racers over the years I have heard many reasons why athletes race. They love competition, speed, challenge, winning and friends to name a few. I have never heard an athlete say they race because of parents or coaches. (Ask them why they race.)

  • As coaches we are with the athletes throughout the full competitive season. We either treat the Championships with the same approach as the other races or we have a special plan. As parents we must support and tell them to work hard. There are no last second pep talks to trick them into winning-that only happens in Disney movies. If the athlete has a passion for the sport then they will figure it out and eventually perform brilliantly.

Here is some WVBBTS alumni news received from alumni parent Heddi Siebel Felix:

Dartmouth won the NCAA national championship at Attitash last Saturday. It was the first time Dartmouth truly won(not tied) a championship since the 1950's. It was a team effort by Nordic and Alpine men and women. The top women  alpine racers included BBTS Lindsay Mann (Dartmouth '07) who won the second run of the slalom and 4th place overall.  Alexandra Fucigna was the Dartmouth womens' alpine team captain.
