Fun was had by all at the WVBBTS Kids Dance this past Saturday evening

From the Desk of the Headmaster-Gary Benedix

  • These are exciting times.  With the opening ceremonies for the Olympics just a few days away, I am excited to report that two of our former students, Alex Heath and Michelle Gorgone, will be there to compete.  For Alex this will be his third Olympics.  Alex skis for South Africa and in the past two Olympics traveled with and was coached by our Director of Athletics, Tom Barbeau.  Michelle is on the U.S Snowboard team and this will be her first Olympics.

  • The writers’ workshop with Dan Newton is running very well and the participation has been great.  My assistant Paula has been attending regularly and reports that several local people, faculty members and students have  participated, sharing  their writings and working together to improve their writing skills.  The workshops are on Monday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:00 pm, and new writers are always welcome so if you are interested we hope to see you there.

  •  As I mentioned last week, Thursday and Friday, February 9 and 10, is our mid-winter break.  There are no scheduled classes and the dorm is closed for both days so parents should plan accordingly.

WVBBTS EQS Skiers win Team Trophy at Sugarloaf

  • Once again the EQS Freestyle Team (our J3,4,5s) has performed spectacularly in both the Mogul and Big Air competitions held at Sugarloaf this past weekend.

  • Mogul day saw Nessa Dziemian laying down her 3rd win of the season with a 19+ point run. Julia Braunstein won the F3 age division in bumps giving BBTS an age group sweep in the girls.

  • Hunt Adams won the M4’s and took a 3rd overall. Then as you look down the result sheet, we had Kyle DeGrace placing 4th, Tyler Thistle 5th, Kyle Keating 7th, and Clayton Vila 10th. Nic Dziemian racked up team points with a 2nd in the M4 age group behind Hunt.

  • In Big Air, the girls again swept the age group with Nessa winning the overall and the F4 age group, while Julia placed 2nd and won the F3 division.

  • The boys are a virtual air force, so here’s how it went: Brendan Wall 1st overall, Clayton Vila 3rd, Kyle Keating 4th, Chase Brooks 5th, and Tyler Thistle 7th.

  • Congratulations to coaches Dan DiPiro and Dan Shuffleton for your outstanding work and your Team Trophy victory.

From Our Head Moguls Coach-Mike Macomber

  • Another week and another great batch of results laid down by our outstanding athletes.  After finishing a great week of jumping up in Lake Placid the mogul team remained to finish two days of competition at good old Whiteface.  Our men stole the show up there with Mikey Clarke returning from Freeride to claim 3rd Place.  Reed Snyderman laid down a great second run despite a little drift and ended up 6th, while Henry Worobec claimed one more top-to-bottom run and ended up 8th

  • Our NOR AM team left for Deer Valley this week and returned with several great results.  The first day of competition two of our girls qualified for finals.  Kenna Nash made her first NOR AM finals and finished 14th while Kayla Snyderman laid down a solid run and placed 7th.  The second day was even more productive than the first with all three of the Waterville girls qualifying for finals, something no other team has accomplished.  Allie Lee made her first finals as well and finished in 14th place.  All three of the girls scored their highest scores yet with Lee scoring a 21.17, Kenna Nash scoring a 22.72 which earned her 5th Place, and Kayla Snyderman improving her best score by a whopping 2 points to a 24.29!  This nice round number earned her 2nd Place and her second NOR AM Podium of the season.

  • This week the team will be resting and recovering getting ready for the final stretch of the season.  I remind the athletes to make sure we keep stretching and getting plenty of rest, nothing like a good night’s sleep to let the body recover!  Our NOR AM team will be leaving for Quebec on Tuesday while our regional team will be heading for Killington on Friday.  Looking forward to another productive week and we'll let you know as soon as we get back!

Student Corner

  • Molly Testwuide is a Junior at WVA.  This is her fourth year on the WVBBTS Alpine team.  She is a JII Racer from Yorktown Heights, NY where she attends Yorktown High School.

  • “Molly, I heard that Mackenzie Carroll and you are planning the Second Annual Valentine’s Day Semiformal Dance for WVA Students.  I attended last year and had a great time.  The decorations were outstanding, even though the music was a bit loud for my ancient ears.”

  • “Well, P$, it is going to be at Legends in Town Square this year.  They will allow us to put up our own decorations. Last year we held it at the WVBBTS Club House cafeteria.  This venue is quite an upgrade.  Last year we borrowed Peter Stokloza’s speakers.  We’ll be able to use the Legends’ DJ station.  We’ll do karaoke and dance contests. We are going to choose a king and queen.”

  • “There is no charge for the dance but everyone that is coming needs to sign up by Wednesday, February 8 before Winter Break on one of the sign up sheets on the wall in either the Stenmark Room or the WVA Cafeteria. We will have juice, pizza, salad, and desserts at the dance.”

  • “Molly, what do you want to tell the prospective attendees of the Valentine Semiformal?”

  • “It’s going to be SWEET!  Wear your finest attire and be ready to have a great time!.”
