- BBTS is experiencing a great year with respect
to membership. The number of families and students in the club and
at the academy are the highest level we have ever experienced!
Keeping up with these numbers creates a challenge on our venues,
facilities and coaching staffs. I feel the coaches, teachers and
administrators are managing our athletes and students by providing
superior training and educational environments. Some of our
snowsports provide unique challenges to our organization especially
when it comes to venues and the amount of un-seasonable weather we
have received this year. It is great to see Mother Nature finally
turning around and giving us the winter we all need and expected. I
also want to thank both the snowboard program director Sam
Harding and our freestyle program director Nick Preston
for staying positive, innovative and keeping their staffs and
athletes motivated this year.
- We are in the heart of the competition season
and I want to wish all the athletes and coaches the best of luck. I
firmly believe our athletes and coaches will represent BBTS with
both their positive conduct and level of performance!
Sincerely,
Pete

- Semester I is wrapping up quickly and report
cards will be going out later this week. Semester II courses will
be transitioned in throughout the week. Trimester students and
those who started in January will receive progress reports rather
than report cards at this time.
- There are no scheduled classes and the dorm
will be closed on February 8th and 9th for our
winter break. It is hoped that most students can go home for the
two days but there are some who will be competing. Our schedule is
very busy so for those who are not competing this will be a good
chance to take a brief break and, if possible, stop by and check in
with their home school teachers.
- It’s been a tough winter with the warm weather
and minimal snow but we are seeing good results both in the
classroom and on the hill. Many of the students and teachers have
also had a tough time with cold like symptoms but now that the
normal cold weather is back to expectation it appears that we are
all getting back into good health as well.
- I would like to take a moment to thank our
houseparents Matt, Ben, Jess and Bill. These are the people who
take care of our boarding student athletes, 30 of them, seven days a
week both day and night. Since November they have made several
trips to the doctor, to the airport, up early every day, many late
nights and it is rare that they ever get a moment to themselves.
They are a great group of caring people who deserve our
appreciation. Thank You!

Academy
Corner-From the English Department |
|
|
|
- The English Department resides, as it did last
year, in Town Square; and so, the sounds of students going to and
from the classroom continues to enhance a sense of community for
Waterville Valley. The WVA shuttle bus system is working effectively
under the guidance of Ben Bacote, bringing the students to classes
on a timely and consistent basis.
- We have several new English teachers this
year, some of whom are applying for a Masters in Fine Arts with a
focus on poetry, and others, who are targeting Masters in Education
degrees; as well as some whose family lives and works in the area.
The cross section of qualified personnel, which has always been a
hallmark of the WVA English department, continues to bring a
diversity of perspective to the benefit of the WVA students.
- Classes are taught in an open setting, with
productive interaction between students and teachers from all the
classes. There is a cooperative attitude in terms of sharing texts
and resources with each other’s students, which promotes camaraderie
and partnering for the betterment of everyone involved.

- We actually had a European or a Western type
day on Tuesday of this week. It was sunny, just below freezing, 3
inches of new snow and this snow stayed dry and wintery. Could be
the day of the year. On top of all this we got to train on World
Cup. The mountain has put excellent snow down on our race trail.
Practicing on the rolls and terrain will help our athletes a great
deal.
- We have listened to some racers talk about the
pressures of competing. Our comeback to this has been many people
face real pressure in their lives. Some of the examples we spoke of
are how our troops in Iraq have constant life and death pressure or
that people have to do well in their jobs every day to support their
families. Athletically, the example, was that professional athletes
have the pressure to win or be cut. Our philosophy is we race
because it is enjoyable and fun. Fun has a different meaning for
each racer so we find what this is and motivate them accordingly. We
want the athlete to challenge themselves to compete as well as they
can and to race the same or better than they had skied in their
training. If they do this then there is nothing more anyone can ask
for. Please talk to your children about competing. Pressure should
not come from parents and coaches, it should come from the racer.
Then we can help them learn and deal with it.

- The snow has fallen, the air is cold, and the
skies are blue. It feels like winter is finally here.
- It has been a busy last two weekends of
competition, and as usual our athletes have performed wonderfully.
For the Slope Style at Cranmore last week, and for the Giant Slalom,
Slalom, and the Slope Style this past weekend at Loon, the results
are here on these links.
·
Coming up the Academy Travel Team will be heading out to
Mt Bachelor in Oregon. They will be competing in the USSA Grand Prix in
both the Slope Style and Half Pipe competitions. Following that, also at
Bachelor, the USSA will be holding one of their Revolution Tour comps.
Our boys have a very busy January-February coming up, so let’s wish them
luck, and safe travels.
·
Thanks again to the parents for all of your support at the
competitions these last two weeks. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed,
and are greatly appreciated.
