  • I want to wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday season.  I look forward to seeing many of you up in Waterville during the course of the vacation week.

  • I am very excited to announce that the Waterville Valley Black and Blue Trail Smashers Ski Educational Foundation Board of Trustees recently elected long time Waterville Valley community and BBTS members Anna McIntyre and Dr. Leland Sosman as WVBBTS Emeritus Trustees.  A WVBBTS Emeritus Trustee is someone who has made extraordinary contributions to WVBBTS over the years and whom the Board of Trustees elects to serve on the Board.

  • Anna’s and Leland’s wisdom and historical knowledge are invaluable assets to our organization and we look forward to them helping us to preserve our deep traditions and move BBTS to the next level of excellence. Not only have Anna and Leland made huge contributions to WVBBTS and its athletes over the years but they have also made huge contributions to competitive snow sports in general.  They truly are icons in the industry.

  • Among Anna McIntyre’s many accomplishments she served on the WVBBTS Board of Directors for 30+ years and as WVBBTS president for two 4-year terms as well as serving on the Board of Directors of the New Hampshire Alpine Racing Association (NHARA), the Board of Directors of the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) and on various FIS and USSA committees.  Anna was the recipient of the Eastern Alpine Official’s Burkett-Dodge Award, the Julius Blegan Award (USSA’s highest volunteer honor) and the "Lifetime Achievement Award 2000" for outstanding lifetime contribution to the sports of Skiing and Snowboarding by the North American Snowsports Journalists Association.  Anna was inducted into the US National Ski Hall of Fame in 1998.

  • Anna also accomplished many “Firsts” in the world of competitive snowsports including being the first woman in the world to serve as Chief of Race of Alpine World Cups in 1980 and being the first woman officer of USSA.  Anna worked at all 11 World Cups in Waterville Valley as well as the Olympics in Innsbruck, Lake Placid, Calgary and Salt Lake.   Anna was also instrumental in coordinating the first freestyle competitions right here in Waterville Valley as well as in making Snowboarding a part of USSA, where Anna went on to serve as the first chairman of the USSA Snowboard Committee.

  • Leland Sosman, affectionately known as “Doc Sosman” or “Sos”, was a graduate of Johns Hopkins Medical School, and went on to become a Radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Women’s Hospital until his retirement in 2002.  Leland continues to hold an Emeritus position at Brigham and Women’s Hospital .  In addition to his busy medical career, Leland has been involved with American ski sports for more than seventy years.  Among his contributions, Leland served as a competition official and organizer, a member of various eastern and national alpine committees and boards and a representative of the United States of America to the International Ski Federation.  Leland was also involved for 70 years, starting with the climb-up-on-seal-skins, on the then new CCC Mt. Tecumseh Trail race events put on by BBTS.

  • Doc Sosman has made major contributions to alpine racing through his successful efforts to "homogenize" ski racing rules to international standards and to move to uniformity in officiating world-wide.   Leland also homogenized USSA (then called NSA) and NCAA rules.  Among Leland’s many awards and recognitions in the snowsports community, Leland is a recipient of the Julius Blegen Award (USSA's highest volunteer honor), a USSA Gold Certificate and three Silver Certificates for service to USSA, the Bud & Mary Little Award for contributions to USSA through long-term involvement in the FIS (being the first winner after the Littles and Bud Little and Doc Sosman being the only ever Honorary USSA Board Members), the Eastern Alpine Official’s Burkett-Dodge Award for contribution to alpine officiating and the Westhaven Award in recognition of outstanding service as a FIS/USSA Technical Delegate.  Leland was inducted into the US National Ski Hall of Fame in 1999.

  • Among the organizations that Leland has served on over the years, he was WVBBTS board member and two term president and 20+ years Race Chairman at BBTS, USSA Alpine Officials chairman, USSA Director and Alpine Vice President (multi-term), USSA Honorary Director, FIS Alpine Rules Committee and Technical Delegate Committee member (and now Honorary Member), multi-term At-Large member of the NHARA Board  and US Ski Education Foundation Trustee and executive committee member.  Leland was also a National Ski Patrol System member, instructor and patrol leader and Certified Professional Ski Touring Instructor, cross country competition organizer, official and competitor.  Leland’s passion for Waterville Valley is exemplified in his many years of service in establishing and maintaining trail systems throughout the Valley including the beautiful Sosman’s Trail near the top of Mt. Tecumseh.    Leland worked the 1964 and 1976 Olympics (Innsbruck), the 1980 Olympics (Lake Placid),  the 1984 Olympics (Sarajevo) (Jury) , the 1988 Olympics (Calgary) and the 2002 Olympics (Salt Lake).  Leland also worked a comparable batch of World Championships (Jury in Crans-Montana).

  • Both Anna and Leland have made snowsports competitions in the United States, and world-wide,

markedly better by their passion for and undaunting dedication to the sport.  Ski Racing Magazine paid tribute to Anna and Leland in its December 13, 2005 issue as being “the people that make this sport [alpine ski racing] possible.  It is a true honor for WVBBTS to have Anna and Leland as Emeritus Trustees.

CEO Corner-From the Desk of Peter Stokloza

  • Race, ride and jump!  BBTS and their dedicated athletes, teachers, coaches and administrators are working very hard and diligently during this difficult weather.  I am extremely proud of the fine job our athletes and students are doing this year. We all know it is only a matter of time before the snow conditions will improve and Mother Nature will give us a lending hand. Our teams are traveling across the country to find snow and attend events.  We wish them safe travel and success.

  • I am proud to announce BBTS held one of the first competitions in the east this weekend.  The annual Pat Hardy Memorial Slalom races were held on High Country this past weekend.  Our volunteers, coaches, mountain employees and officials helped pull off the IMPOSSIBLE!  Thank you everyone! While many other programs and clubs are struggling for training space our mountain management has come through in allowing us training space.  I want to say a special thanks to Rob Bachelder for being so accommodating to our club’s needs over this difficult period.

  • It will be an interesting Holiday Training week, I urge everyone to be patient with the mountain and each other.  We will all be doing our best to accommodate ALL our snow sports athletes.  I have confidence we will have a fun and exciting week.

  • Happy Holidays,

Pete

Academy Corner-From the Desk of Gary Benedix

  • Despite the many challenges that this fall’s weather has presented, we’ve had a great start.  The student athletes who entered the program in November began with an excellent trip to Colorado.  It was very helpful and I am tremendously pleased to have had two of our teachers, Ally Keefe and Ed Manzi, with me to see that our students maintained their academics.  Since our return, some of the Alpine JI & IIs as well as a group of Snowboarders have been back to Colorado for more work on snow.  At present, several of our Freestyle Skiers are in Utah.  At home, the mountain has been able to produce snow when it would seem impossible so that our coaches have been able to run their daily training on snow most days, adding a little creativity during those few days around Thanksgiving.

  • The first progress reports for all students went out last week and grades close for the quarter (Report Cards) on Friday, January 19th.  Those grades will be mailed out the middle of the next week.

  • I am very pleased with the Faculty again this year.  Several teachers have returned from previous years providing an abundance of experience that our students as well as new teachers benefit greatly from. We have scheduled Parent Teacher night for Friday, January 12, 2007 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Snows Mountain Campus where parents will have the opportunity to meet the faculty as well as other parents in the program.  We will be sending more information directly to WVA parents.

  • Our Math Department head, Joan Sweeney, will once again be providing extra tutorial help for math students on Mondays during study hall at the Academy Dorm.  Joan has done this for us over the last few years and it has been tremendously helpful.  I encourage any students who need a little extra help to see Joan on Mondays.

  • I am, and will continue through the holidays, working on the academic schedules for the students slated to start classes on January 2nd.  Right after morning meeting on the 2nd Kim and I will meet with the new students to distribute schedules and provide a brief orientation. Students will be in class before the end of the first period.

  • It has been challenging with the lack of natural snow but everyone, Coaches, Teachers, Students and Parents have pulled it together for a great start.

Alpine Corner-From the Desk of Tom Barbeau

  • I want to wish you and your family a happy holiday season.

  • I’d really like to thank the mountain for letting us use High Country because many others don’t even have a training venue yet.  Our children have been up there, they have been fantastic and they are really working hard on some tough terrain.  It will pay off for the rest of this year.

Snowboard Corner-From the Desk of Sam Harding

  • Well, the holidays are upon us, and still there is only one trail ‘top to bottom’ at our lovely mountain. Handicapped by our limited terrain, we have still managed to have a few rail-jams, and a USASA snowboard event, in which our competitors performed wonderfully. It is going to take lots of faith, hope and praying, (for those who pray) to get this snow to come. It has been tough to train with terrain that gets chopped up and turned into moguls by lunchtime, but we’ve managed.

  • We had a successful trip to Breckenridge, and did our best to bring the snow back with us.  We had a few athletes compete in the US Grand Prix out there, and despite their efforts we came home empty handed. However, we are proud of those athletes, and look forward to their successes in future events to come.

  • Our December camp is soon approaching.  We will have our wonderful, and very highly skilled, and qualified coaching staff for those kids who have signed up. For parents who are signed up for the worker credits, if you have any questions concerning the camp during the December holiday week, please contact either myself, or our Administrator, Jes Luca, and we will be happy to assist you with any questions that you might have.

  • So to all our snowboard families, and extended members alike, we wish you the happiest of holidays. See you all soon.

Best Regards,

Sam Harding

Freestyle Corner-From the Desk of Nick Preston

  • US Selections, where the top US skiers compete for US Team selection and FIS Nor-AM selection, began with the 1st of 2 mogul events on December 17th. Utah had coverage but was shy on snow until 2 feet fell yesterday before and during moguls. The team had a good day. US Team skiers Kayla Snyderman finished 3rd and Tim Preston, after a shaky semi-final, came from back in the finals to finish 7th. Allie Lee skied a 19 point run as did Reed Snyderman, both finishing in the top half of the 127 skier field.

  • Truly surprising the field (but not coaches Rob Day and Nick Preston) was 15 year old Sophia Schwartz finishing 6th with a 23 point run, just behind 2 national team Canadians and 3 US Team girls. This finish was the best among all divisional skiers and had Sophiaout scoring 2 other US Team girls.

  • Our next events (a mogul, a dual mogul, and 2 aerial events) start up again on the 20th. The WVBBTS team competing here include the following
    • In the moguls and dual moguls:
      • Allison Lee
      • Alissa Pinkoski
      • Sophia Schwartz
      • Reed Snyderman
      • Our aerialist are:
      • Allison Lee
      • Alissa Pinkoski
      • PJ Beauregard
      • Paul Sullivan
      • Hans Gardner
      • Andrew Hathaway
      • Billy Edwards

  • A reminder to all freestylers that we will train on the 23rd, we will hold to the schedule recently circulated by Sharon Schmidt.

  • See you then.

Nick Preston

From Dan Shuffleton

  • Little Slammer Event at WV
    • older boys
      • With the short amount of training our athletes have had we still had great results from everyone. Tyler Thistle finished first of the older boys group and from there it went Scott Nelson and then PJ Beauregard.  Tiffany Davenport won the women’s by a land slide.
  • Little Slammer Event at WV
    • younger boys
      • These boys had a great showing that weekend with Alex Breda in second place and Ben Parkington in third place.
  • The No Bib Jib at Sunday River
    • The event is a team event made up of 20 teams with 4 riders to a team. The WV Team A made up of Andrew Hathaway, Matt Pothier and Nick Martini is starting the four events series out with a win.  The WV Team B is made up of Tyler Thistle, Dave Powers, Scott Nelson and Hans Gardner.  This team finished 7th at an event full of talent.
  • Great job everyone!!

Development & Communications Corner-From the Desk of Sharon Schmidt

  • Many thanks to the donors, parent volunteers and WVBBTS and community attendees who made the 2nd Annual WVBBTS Ski and Snowboard Ball a huge success.  Over 500 people gathered together that evening to celebrate the start of a new snow sports season and over $11,000 in net proceeds was raised at the auction and raffle that evening to benefit BBTS.

  • We hope you can join us at the Family Dance that Martha Macomber, a WVBBTS parent, is planning on Thursday, December 28 from 6:30 pm-8:00 pm on the top floor of the Base Lodge.  Martha tells us it’s a HOEDOWN!  See details below in the Upcoming Events section.

  • WVBBTS launched its 2006/2007 Annual Giving Campaign in early December.  Proceeds from this campaign will directly benefit our athletes this season as outlined at the below link http://www.wvbbts.org/proceeds_2006.html.  If you haven't already made a pledge or donation for this season's Annual Giving Campaign, please do so as soon as possible.  We are planning a second telethon to reach all those families who have not yet sent in a pledge or donation.  Just a reminder that WVBBTS is a 501(c)(3) educational foundation and that donations are deductible to the extent permitted by law.  Although the WVBBTS fiscal year does not end on December 31, you may want to consider making your donation by December 31, 2006 for your own tax planning purposes.  You may click at the below link for a donor card if you did not receive one in the mail http://www.wvbbts.org/donate_card.pdf

ABOUT US

We’ve been Distributors with Shaklee Corporation for 21 years now. Our relationship began when Shaklee nutrition supplements helped our son through a major health challenge. After a very difficult year someone suggested to us that we try Shaklee nutrition supplements to see if they had any effect. We hadn’t heard of Shaklee but decided to give it a try. That suggestion literally changed our lives as the health benefits to our son quickly became apparent. He’s a healthy 36 year old now, so we feel really lucky that someone took the time to tell us about Shaklee.

For the past several years Shaklee has been the proud nutritional sponsor of the US Ski and Snowboard Teams. Here are links to some comments made by

Andy Walshe, Assistant Athletic Director, Sports Science U.S.S.A. and

Susie Simmons, USSA Sports Dietitian and Physiologist .

Living in Waterville Valley we’ve learned about BBTS and support its goals and philosophy. We’re excited to have the opportunity to partner with BBTS this year.
