- It is great to see Mother Nature finally
turning around and giving us a real old fashion New England winter.
The skiing and riding at the mountain is amazing! I was delighted
to see all the athletes and parents enjoying the new snow on Sunday
and braving the elements. Skiing and riding in conditions like that
makes us all stronger and more adaptable. The coaching staffs are
all working hard to prepare their athletes for the competition
season which has begun.
- The program held its first competition this
past weekend with a record number of participants and our new race
secretary Carl Anderson at the helm. Carl, the timing staff and
the whole race crew did a remarkable job and I look forward to our
many events that will follow this season. Sunday’s race was
postponed until Saturday, December 22nd and we hope that
we will have the same amount of volunteers and support for the make
up date. I am hoping that everyone enjoys the experience of working
our home events. When we put on a successful event, it is something
that we can be very proud of and is a vital part of our club’s
tradition and history.
- I want to wish all of the athletes good luck
in the competition season. Always do your best and represent
yourselves and your family with class and honor. Happy Holidays to
all the athletes, staff, parents and club members. Thanks for your
support and let’s enjoy the great conditions!
Happy Holidays

- Can anyone remember either being cold before
Christmas or having skied powder in December? What a great start to
what will be a super ski season.
- We have a blend of youth and experience with
our coaching staff and I am seeing some excellent skiing from our
athletes. At least 4 JIV’s were telling us what a fun day they had
following Mark Mikos around the mountain. They had no choice, but to
learn to be comfortable with speed.
- Thanks to Jim Stein and his course workers and
to our J1/2 staff for working so hard at the Pat Hardy. Rest well as
we have to do it again next Saturday. Also, a thanks to Sharon
Schmidt for organizing the Junior Pre-Christmas Camp last week. I
believe we all had a good time and I got to have fun with some good
young racers (great charades).
- I would like to get on my soap box for a
moment. I observe the boarders we have staying with us from the
Academy as well as the campers from last week and I am seeing some
terrible eating habits. We demand good grades from our children so
we should do the same with their eating. Help them develop habits
and even when they are on their own they will make the correct
choices. Treats are just that-a treat. You are what you eat. Please
check out the Team Bible on our website. It has a chapter on
Nutrition with some good ideas.

FROM BILL ENOS
- Happy Holidays – Thanks Santa for bringing us
snow in December and thank you so very much for the early delivery
of a park with a jump. I thought you may have gotten stuck in a
chimney for a while, but my mom said it was global warming. Well,
what more can I say, we are off to a great start this winter, with
tons of snow and a fun group of hard working riders. Everyone must
have been really well behaved this year, so maybe Santa will bring
us a Half- pipe and a Boardercross course. Who is this global
warming guy anyhow?
- Keep your eye on the schedules for upcoming
competitions and camps.
Bill
FROM PETE THORNDIKE
- It’s been the best December in recent memory!
With 15 inches of snow already on the ground and more predicted for
next week, this winter is shaping up to be unforgettable!
- We are three weeks into the weekend program,
and I couldn’t be happier with how everything is running. John
Ingham has been a great addition to the coaching staff. He and John
Frawley will be working with the younger riders this year. Kevin
Matte is working with the older riders and Grahm Hoffman, as always,
has the Brownie Brat Pack (the girls). I will be working with the
alpine riders; keep an eye out for our training schedule, it will be
posted on the bulletin board in the clubhouse. I have encouraged all
the coaches to bring their groups up to take a few runs through the
gates-when it comes time for the club race over the Christmas break
they will be glad they did!
- Next weekend will be our first USASA event, a
rail jam at Waterville on Saturday the 22nd. Though it is just going
to be a “fun” event and have no points, it will be a great chance
for all the riders to get accustomed to the USASA competitions.
There will be a sign up sheet on the bulletin board in the
clubhouse, please write your child’s name down, or contact me, if he
or she is planning on competing. Competing is not mandatory,
however, we strongly encourage it. One of the main goals of the
WVBBTS Snowboard Program is to introduce our riders to competitions.
- Stay tuned for info on the Christmas week
events; I am planning on having a slopestyle competition and a race
for the kids. The tentative date is December 30th.
- Get those snow tires on and we’ll see you this
weekend!

- The Waterville Valley Freestyle Team is well
engaged in both training and competition.
- Congratulations to Kayla Snydeman on a 17th
place in the first mogul World Cup of the 2008 season in Tignes,
France. WVA alumnus David Babic placed 12th. Team members
Hannah Kearney and Tim Preston will make their return to World Cup
in January.
- Presently, coaches Rob Day and Wes Preston are
out West with our Nor-Am level skiers at US Selections, where US
Team and Nor-Am spots are chosen. Mogul skiers Alissa Pinkoski,
Erich Berberich, and Reed Snyderman are with coach Rob and will
compete at Winter Park this week. Our aerialists are in Park City
with coaches Wes and Tim Preston, several of whom are performing
their very first singles on snow and twisting double flips. The
aerial team consists of Allie Lee, Paul Sullivan, Ashley Caldwell,
Scott Nelson, Cody Bohonnon, John Duhamel, Hans Gardner, and Matt
DePeters. Our best to all these athletes for success in competition.
Go after those Nor-Am Spots.
- On the home front, I’m proud to report
outstanding results from Nessa Dziemian and WVA athlete Bennett
Roukema who placed 2nd and 1st respectively at
the Sugarloaf A Mogul opener this past weekend.
- Freeriders Kyle Keating, Tiffany Davenport,
and new team member, Tyler Mega, rode to victories at the 1st
WV Slammer series rail jam. Good job.
- As we head into the December holiday week, you
may all expect to see a return to WV by some of our finest. We’ve
already had a Hannah Kearney visit, who shall be with us right up
until her 1st starts in January. Tim Preston and Dylan
Ferguson will be back around also. Mogul coach superstar, Mike
“Butter” Macomber will be here to coach along with your regular
staff coaches.
- A few final notes:
- As many of you are aware, Chase Brooks
sustained an injury to his kidney and shall be out for the
season. Fortunately, Chase is recovering well toward an
anticipated full recovery. Please send Chase your best by email.
His email is
cbrooks@holderness.org.
- Also, Sophia Schwartz underwent successful
ACL surgery 2 weeks ago, and she is doing very well. You can bet
she is missing her skiing and all of you, so give her some well
wishes. Her email is
sschwartz@holderness.org . I’m sure she’d love to hear from
you, aside from looking out her window and seeing all the snow.
- See you this weekend December 22 and 23 for
some great training with a foot and half of new snow!

- Volunteerism Extraordinaire-It’s
amazing what WVBBTS parent volunteers are able to accomplish for our
organization. Whether it is an on snow event or an off snow
volunteer position, there are always outstanding results that we
should all be proud of. Most recently on the off snow volunteer
front a team of hardworking parents (both pre-, during and
post-event) helped to make the 3rd Annual Ski and
Snowboard Ball a huge success grossing over $25,000 in special
events fundraising revenues. And let’s not forget to thank our
parent and community “shoppers” who went home with all kinds of
goodies from our auction and raffle. WVBBTS relies on the Ski and
Snowboard Ball to raise the bulk of its Special Events fundraising
goal to benefit all club and academy athletes this season.
- Annual Giving Campaign Year End Giving-Not
only do we rely on parents, staff and friends of BBTS to reach our
Special Events fundraising goal, but we also rely on them to reach
our Annual Giving Campaign Goal-another effort that benefits all
club and academy athletes this season. We will officially launch
the Annual Giving Campaign in early January, but we realize that for
many of you there may be a tax benefit to make a donation to the
Annual Giving Campaign prior to 12/31/07. You can click here
http://www.wvbbts.org/donate_card.pdf to print a donation card
and make your donation by year end. STAY TUNED FOR MORE DETAILS IN
EARLY JANUARY.
- WVBBTS Telethon-We will be
enlisting volunteers to join us for a fun evening at the Katz home
in Waterville Valley on Saturday, January 19th late
afternoon/early evening for a telethon to support this year's Annual
Giving Campaign. Please consider joining fellow parents at this
telethon for a fun evening to raise funds for our athletes (e-mail
me if you are interested at
sschmidt@wvbbts.org) . If you can’t make the telethon, please
try to thank the fellow WVBBTS parent that may call you that evening
for donating their time to raise funds to support the athletes in
your family.
